The Glow of Fireflies: A Journey into the World of Glowworms
Around the Feast of St. John, an impressive natural spectacle unfolds in the darkness of the night each year: the gentle glow of fireflies. On Wednesday, June 24, and Friday, June 26, 2026, the Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Center in Wanninchen will offer an expert-guided excursion along the Görlsdorfer Forest to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon.
Ecology and Species Knowledge in Focus
The emphasis of this 1.5-hour excursion is on imparting well-founded knowledge about the different species of fireflies. Participants will learn interesting facts about:
- Life Cycle and Biology: How does the glow occur, and what role does it play in reproduction? The complex development from egg to beetle will be clearly explained.
- Night Ecology and Species Protection: It will be shown why these beetles are currently endangered and what protective measures are necessary in the Lower Lusatian Ridge Nature Park to preserve their habitats.
- Observation of Nocturnal Fauna: With a bit of luck, other nocturnal animals may be spotted during the hike. This event aims to specifically enhance zoological knowledge and train the ability to observe attentively in the dark.

Note: Since the hike takes place in the dark, sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, and the bringing of a personal flashlight are requested. This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection (MLUK) of the State of Brandenburg.
