Lights of the Forest: The Natural Spectacle of Fireflies in Lower Lusatia
Around the Feast of St. John, a special biological phenomenon can be observed in the forests of Lower Lusatia: the flight period of fireflies. On Saturday, June 27, the Heinz Sielmann Nature Experience Center in Wanninchen offers the opportunity to learn more about these fascinating beetles.
Knowledge Transfer and Creative Design
The event will kick off with a short lecture providing insights into the life cycle, specific habitat requirements, as well as the threats and necessary conservation measures for these glowing beetles. Following this, there will be an opportunity to test the newly acquired knowledge in a family-friendly quiz. To complement the creative aspect, participants will craft a glowing jar, symbolically serving as a "firefly for home."
Night Hike through the Görlsdorf Forest
The highlight of the evening will be a night hike of about two kilometers through the Görlsdorf Forest. With a bit of luck, the glowing beetles can be observed in their natural habitat. The excursion offers a chance to experience the nighttime dynamics of the forest firsthand.

Target Audience: Families and children aged 8 and older
Cost: Free (plus €5 material fee)
Equipment: Sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, a flashlight, and mosquito repellent are recommended.
Registration: Registration is required. This environmental education initiative is co-financed by funds from the European Union.
