The VHS and memorial site are showcasing 7 DEFA film classics. Through the selected DEFA films from the state-run film production of the GDR, recent German history (1946-1990) and the influence of GDR politics on film, culture, and society are presented.

4th Period: From the Biermann Affair to Reunification (1976 to 1990)

One bears the other's burden... (Directed by: Lothar Warneke, GDR 1987)

In the early 1950s: In a lung rehabilitation clinic in the GDR, two mismatched patients must share their hospital room. The young people's policeman Hubertus Koschenz and the Protestant vicar Josef Heiliger appear as an irreconcilable opposing pair. Above one bed hangs a portrait of Stalin, above the other a crucifix. Not only because one reads the Communist Manifesto and the other the Bible, is a lot of conflict programmed. Nevertheless, the two slowly draw closer, noticing commonalities in their thinking. As Koschenz's condition worsens, Heiliger gives him his more effective medications from the West.
