The area to the left and right of the Spree River north of Lübben has been developing into a more natural state for about 40 years, with only minimal human influence. What were once soil extraction sites for dyke and road construction have now transformed into small ponds that appear natural, and meadows and former fish ponds have reverted to moors and forests that one would hardly expect to find here. These areas now host an extraordinarily rich variety of flora and fauna and are protected as nature conservation and FFH (Flora, Fauna, Habitat) areas. In this region, cuckoos and golden orioles can be observed quite frequently.
