Opening of the Paul Gerhardt Memorial Year

With an exhibition opening and a festive concert, the city of Lübben (Spreewald)/Lubin (Błota), in collaboration with the Paul-Gerhardt-Verein Lübben e.V. and the Evangelical Paul-Gerhardt Church Community Lübben, will officially launch the Paul Gerhardt Memorial Year on January 24. Admission to all events is free. The kickoff will take place on January 24 at 3:30 PM with the ceremonial opening of the memorial year in the foyer of the town hall, featuring the vernissage of a special calligraphy exhibition. Citizens from Lübben and the region have artistically crafted texts and quotes of Paul Gerhardt under the guidance of calligrapher Karin Herms during a multi-day course. The resulting works impressively demonstrate how timeless, moving, and relevant the thoughts of the hymn writer remain to this day. The calligraphy exhibition will be on display in the Lübben town hall until March 12, 2026, inviting visitors to engage deeply with the language, faith, and poetry of Paul Gerhardt.

FESTIVE ORGAN CONCERT AT THE PAUL-GERHARDT-CHURCH
Following this, the Paul-Gerhardt-Verein invites you to a festive musical opening at the Paul-Gerhardt Church at 5:00 PM. The cantress and regional church musician of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO), Cornelia Ewald, will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach on the Schuke organ, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, as well as compositions by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Music and words will combine to create a ceremonial start to a year dedicated entirely to Paul Gerhardt. Admission to both events is free. Arriving early ensures seating.
