At that time, he was already severely ill with tuberculosis and lived far away from Moscow, in Crimea, while Knipper was engaged at the Moscow Art Theatre. From this physical distance, an intense correspondence developed, which, despite the desire and all the longing, never lost its humor, lightness, or even its poetry.
