The rooster plucking is a relatively young tradition in Werben compared to Carnival. The brave boys, dressed in white shirts and white trousers, ride their horses through the gate and try to pluck the head and wings of a already dead rooster after a few practice rounds with "consolation prizes." Whoever manages to pull off the head earns the title of the first harvest king. The second and third harvest kings are determined by pulling off a wing. The winners are rewarded with a wreath made of oak leaves for both the rider and the horse.
