A late debut? In Martha Argerich's life, there is no "late"; she appears timeless and ageless, playing in her 80s with that fire she has managed to retain like magic throughout her life. This connects her with Rudolf Buchbinder, as the two have known each other since their student years in Vienna. While they have had the fortune of being lifelong friends who have always held admiration for one another, the young Johannes Brahms was plagued by "the shadow of Beethoven." Beethoven's B-flat Piano Concerto combines wit, stubbornness, and lyrical moments. By the time of his wonderfully rich and melancholic E minor Symphony, Brahms had long stepped out of the shadow of his overpowering role model. The French composer Louise Farrenc was by no means in the shadow of her male colleagues. Her works were published and performed, including the second of her overtures for orchestra, which the Munich Philharmonic, under their chief conductor Lahav Shani, will open the concert evening with: a captivating work by a confident, successful woman whose music is increasingly being heard again in concert halls around the world.
