VIENNA CALLING showcases facets of Viennese culture beyond the mainstream. It results in a poetic approach to the music and cultural scene of a European metropolis that feels both old-fashioned and hyper-modern, where the current conflicts of our time unfold. The Viennese artists take the urban space they need, but it is becoming increasingly limited... Vienna Calling is not a music documentary in the traditional sense, nor is it an Austropop history lesson; rather, it is an entertaining documentary musical about the fertile ground of the Vienna music hype that has been taking place for several years. The protagonists of the film – including Der Nino aus Wien, Lydia Haider, and Voodoo Jürgens – visibly enjoy performing. Vienna Calling offers them another cinematic stage, which they joyfully take over to present a show filled with humor. Following the motto “Let the music do the talking,” it is primarily the songs and lyrics of our protagonists that speak here.
