During his lifetime, Mahler was repeatedly accused of incorporating trivial musical gestures into his symphonic works. Marches, operettas, fairground music, military calls, waltzes, and landlers all appear strikingly often. Today, they are a hallmark of his style; at the time, they puzzled a society that was not familiar with Mahler's broad integration of various musical genres as an expression of life's diversity. What did these original genres sound like? How did Mahler adapt them? And how do we interpret them today?

The Viennese theater musicians, shaped by their years of collaboration with Michael Heltau and known for their musical approach to all genres, will address these questions with visible and audible pleasure under the direction and arrangements of Tscho Theissing.
