When the artist Valeska Röver (1849–1931) founded an art school for women in 1891 at Glockengießerwall in the heart of Hamburg, education at state institutions was still exclusively reserved for men. Röver herself had studied at the privately run "Académie Julian" in Paris and was to write an important chapter in art history with her own school. The exhibition at Kunsthaus Stade presents this institution and focuses on the work of its founder and the remarkable graduates. It highlights the educational and working conditions of female artists in modern times and also takes a look at the networks that shaped their careers. Alma del Banco and Gretchen Wohlwill, Gerda Koppel, and Frauke Missfeldt-Bünz were among the artists who studied at the private Hamburg women's painting school and made connections. The exhibition of their works showcases the wide range of female perspectives around 1900 and brings to light the profound societal and aesthetic upheavals of that time.
