On our tour "The Fehn Shipping," we invite you to learn more about the history of Fehn shipping. We will discover the historical and current significance of the lock and sluice gate, the former shipyard in the harbor district, and the old company house. We will also learn about the different types of Fehn bridges, the various ship types, and the many craft businesses related to Fehn shipping that existed in the area. At the end of our tour, we will visit the over 110-year-old Tjalk, the Ebenhaezer from Rhauderfehn, which is anchored in the harbor of Westrhauderfehn and today represents a landmark of our more than 250-year-old Fehn community.
Description: Our tour guide will welcome you at the paddle and pedal station by the café at the sluice in Rhauderfehn (Am Siel 6a, 26817 Rhauderfehn). While enjoying a pot of coffee or tea, you will listen to the guide, who will provide information about the planned tour and explain the historical significance of the location you are currently at. After all, it was from here that the first settlers dug into the moor, and Fehn shipping began here. We will learn more about the former shipyard and the importance of the sluice gates. After that, we will visit the lock, hear about the once-impressive windmill "Zeldenrüst," the company house, and the Fehn bridges. Then we will walk to the Ebenhaezer. There we will be greeted by the captain of the ship, who will share the history of this old flat-bottomed ship, this Tjalk, with us. Here, we can even take the ship's wheel in our hands. Then we will go below deck and listen to the crew share exciting stories of actual or supposed experiences in seafaring while enjoying delicious herring rolls. To quench our thirst, drinks will be available on board.
Services: Guided tour with a visit to the lock, ship tour with a guide, and herring rolls. Drinks on board are not included in the price and may be paid for by a donation from the guest on board.
