Sunday Tour: Italian Royal Dream and Phoenix from the Ashes

With the Belvedere Pfingstberg, Friedrich Wilhelm IV aims to fulfill his grand "Italian dream" in Potsdam. Inspired by Roman architecture, an impressive lookout castle is created, which becomes a popular destination for the people of Potsdam and Berlin until after World War II. With the division of Germany after the war, the Pfingstberg ensemble suddenly lies in the border area of the GDR and increasingly falls into disrepair. It is only through the commitment of young Potsdam residents in the late 1980s that the rescue of this unique site begins. A member of the Pfingstberg Association guides guests through the tumultuous history of Pfingstberg. Anecdotes, individual expertise, and personal experiences related to Karl Friedrich Schinkel's first work, the Pomona Temple, the lookout castle Belvedere built according to the plans of Friedrich Wilhelm IV, and the garden monument created by Peter Joseph Lenné are the focus of the tour.
