Sculpture Collection Waldsiedlung – Art, Contemporary History, and Hidden Stories Discover a unique art space in the heart of Bernau near Berlin with the guided tour "Sculpture Collection Waldsiedlung." For nearly 13 years, the urban art space has been the exhibition venue for the Sculpture Collection of Waldsiedlung Bernau, making an extraordinary connection between art, urban history, and contemporary history publicly accessible. The tour narrates the fascinating story of the sculptures, whose origins are closely tied to the Waldsiedlung – a planned and constructed, secluded residential area for the leadership of the GDR, established from 1958 onwards. From the very beginning, figurative bronze sculptures and sandstone sculptures were an integral part of the landscaping. However, until 1990, they remained hidden from the public, just like their surroundings. With the opening of the site starting in 1989/1990, many of the artworks began a somewhat adventurous journey. In 2010, the sculptures were secured and meticulously restored by the city of Bernau. They eventually found a new, protected location in the urban art space – now as a publicly accessible sculpture collection in the center of Bernau near Berlin. During the special tour, you will learn background information about the artworks, their artists, and their tumultuous history. The tour is complemented by additional exciting anecdotes surrounding the sculpture collection. Following the tour, a film portrait of the sculptor Lore Plietzsch (1930) will be shown, whose bronze sculpture "Swimmer" from 1962 is part of the collection. She is the only interviewable contemporary witness among the represented artists.
