Theater evening about the year 1990 in Hoyerswerda "Microcosm 1990. End and Beginning of a Country" on Saturday, February 21, at 5 PM, City Museum in the Hoyerswerda Castle.
What did the year 1990 feel like here in Hoyerswerda? The research theater "Microcosm 1990" by the Berlin collective Vajswerk takes the audience back to a time when everything suddenly changed. The Wall was gone, the GDR disappeared – and no one knew exactly what would happen next. An important part of the play takes place right in the middle of Hoyerswerda, in the summer of 1990. On July 1, the Day of the Mining and Energy Worker and also the first day of the Deutsche Mark, four people meet at a goulash cannon. They talk about their work, their hopes, their fears, and their dreams. Some are looking forward to new things, while others are afraid of losing everything. They all stand at a beginning – not knowing where it will lead. The play depicts such encounters in other locations as well: at a New Year's Eve party in Leipzig, on a trip north, at a birthday party in Berlin on October 3. It is always about ordinary people whose lives suddenly changed fundamentally in 1990.
What can you expect from this theater evening? Four actors take on many different roles. They do not tell a dry story but show small scenes from everyday life: conversations, decisions, doubts, joy. You watch people trying to find their way in a new world. This makes history come alive and understandable – even for those who were very young in 1990 or not yet alive. "Microcosm 1990" is based on interviews, memories, letters to the editor, and newspaper articles from Hoyerswerda, Leipzig, Rostock, and Berlin. Maxie Jost researched the Hoyerswerda part, and Katja Lehmann directed. The cast includes Linda Fülle, Greta Galisch de Palma, Laura Mitzkus, and Stephan Thiel, who each take on multiple roles. After the Berlin premiere, the play has already been shown in Leipzig and Rostock. The evening in Hoyerswerda marks the provisional conclusion of the guest performance tour.
Following the performance, the City Museum and the research theater invite the audience to a discussion. Here, you can share stories, listen, ask questions, and talk together about the year 1990 – about memories, feelings, and what this time means to this day.
