Exhibition "Searching for the Wide. Photographs of the Late GDR and Early 1990s"

The exhibition presents images from a decade that is remembered and discussed controversially today. It showcases works by twelve photographers who sought breadth in personal, artistic, and social documentary ways. Between 1983 and 1995, the artists captured both stagnation and existential changes. "Come! into the open, friend" – the first line of a Hölderlin poem was a popular saying in the late GDR. The exhibition "Seeking the Wide," curated by Isabel Enzenbach and Anja Tack from the Leibniz Center for Contemporary History Potsdam (ZZF), connects to this associated call and displays photographs by artists who used their cameras to open up perspectives. The photo series on display were created before and after 1989/90. They make visible the societal constraints and breakthroughs of those years. The photographic work itself also evolved under changing conditions.
