ROBERT SCHÖNHERR QUARTET

One does not necessarily have to compulsively reinvent the musical wheel to create something exciting and captivating. At least, one can come to this conclusion when listening to the Robert Schönherr Quartet.

The Viennese pianist Robert Schönherr and his fellow musicians Dusan Novakov (drums), Joschi Schneeberger (double bass), and Herwig Gradischnig (tenor and soprano saxophone) tread the paths of more classical and traditional jazz, with the quartet venturing into the avant-garde and experimental only – if at all – in rare moments. At first glance, this sounds like a familiar and not particularly thrilling story. However, it ultimately turns out quite differently than one might think. What these four exceptional talents bring forth in a truly impressive manner is music that possesses that certain something. Classic jazz interpreted in a modern way – everything fits together wonderfully, wrapped in very varied arrangements and warm-sounding melodies, with diverse and atmospheric arcs of tension, a light-footed buoyancy that barely touches the ground, the playful elegance with which the participants approach the music, and the cleverly placed spontaneous shifts that occur time and again.
