Marion Poschmann: The Pine Islands

In her 2017 novel "The Pine Islands," Marion Poschmann tells the story of the surprising pilgrimage of her protagonist Gilbert Silvester, following in the footsteps of the Japanese haiku master Matsuo Basho, who lived in the 17th century. Gilbert decides to follow Basho's pilgrimage to the northern islands of Japan, known as the Pine Islands. The goal of this journey for Basho is to turn away from oneself, from all luxury and unnecessary desires; what is important is turning towards things, towards nature. (Suhrkamp Verlag 2017)
