Community Cinema: How Life Sometimes Plays Out

The founding of the municipal cinema Diepholz in 1987 marked the beginning of a success story that continues to this day. Many of the guests are long-time "regulars" who have been visiting the cinema for years. The focus is on special and as current as possible films that are rarely or never shown in the region's cinemas. The 25-year-old Marie-Line is just getting by in the port city of Le Havre, as the early death of her mother and her father's work accident, in which he lost a leg, have thrown her off course. In the bistro where she works as a waitress, she meets the young student Alexandre, who works as a ticket collector at the cinema and dreams of a directing career. However, she does not share his interests, which leads him to want to avoid her. A heated argument about this escalates: he ends up in the hospital, she loses her job, ends up in court, and receives a fine that she cannot pay. The judge, the melancholic old jurist Gilles, who has just lost his driver's license, wants to help her. He hires her as his driver for a month: the beginning of an unusual friendship.
