Tobias Nigl, MSc: Amphibians in the Traun-Donau Floodplains

Amphibians play an essential role in the ecosystem as a link between aquatic and terrestrial habitats: they are efficient insect hunters (pest control) and serve as food for birds and mammals, as well as consuming algae in their tadpole stage, thereby helping to clean water bodies. Additionally, they are important bioindicators, and their disappearance can signal early disturbances in the ecosystem.

The European protected area "Traun-Donau Floodplains" in the south of Linz is one of the most valuable habitats for amphibians in Upper Austria, providing a habitat for more than 10 different amphibian species. In 2022, the distribution of the amphibian population in this area and the state of the water bodies were examined and compared with surveys from 1998 and 2006. Tobias Nigl MSc will report on the development trends of the individual species derived from this data, the importance of amphibians in the ecosystem, and necessary conservation measures in his presentation.
