In St. Stephen's Cathedral, you can hear gentle breezes and mighty thunderstorms, birdsong and the barking of a dog, the hunt and a peasant dance, which Vivaldi composed in his Four Seasons. Vivaldi had a unique talent for creating musical images that stimulate the imagination and captivate the audience. Where could it be more fitting to perform Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" – a parable on life and death – than in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, where the burial ceremonies for the composer were also celebrated after his death in 1741? Vivaldi arrived in Vienna in 1740, impoverished, hoping to serve the Emperor. Just ten months later, he passed away and was buried in Vienna. J. S. Bach's Violin Concerto in E major complements the program, for which the composer took inspiration from Vivaldi's concertos. It thus contains, on one hand, echoes of Vivaldi, and on the other hand, Bach's unmistakable musical spirit with virtuosic solos. In the dialogue between the strings and the soloist, an entertaining and airy concert experience emerges, beautifully rounding off Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
