SEARCHING FOR ITALY | "Stories of Longing, Happiness, and Hope" In 2010, Martin Engelmann is commissioned by the renowned weekly magazine "DIE ZEIT" to photograph a report on South Tyrol. During his journey through the majestic Dolomites, memories of a magical childhood and unforgettable family vacations on the Italian Adriatic awaken within him. In the following years, Martin Engelmann embarks on a quest to find the places of longing from his childhood and to discover new regions of Italy. This marks the beginning of a years-long photo and film project about Martin Engelmann's personal dreamland, Italy. In the fairytale city of Venice, he experiences the colorful carnival with all its vibrant nuances. Shortly thereafter, he walks the historical paths of the Franciscan Way, traversing the gentle hills of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio, until he finally stands before the ancient walls of Rome. Year after year, Martin Engelmann returns to Italy, deeply moved by encounters with people who share their stories of longing, happiness, and hope with him. Following the traces of antiquity, his travels lead him to the vibrant metropolis of Naples and the sunken Pompeii. Here, Italy breathes history. Just a stone's throw from the shadow of Vesuvius lies the most magnificent coastal landscape in the world: the Amalfi Coast and the picturesque Capri, which are considered the epitome of Dolce Vita. Martin Engelmann's journey reaches its climax in the south, where Calabria, Apulia, Sicily, and Sardinia delight with their unparalleled diversity. Here, the harmonious connection between man and nature has shaped the regions and tells the stories of those who yearn for a simple, fulfilling life.
