Medicine in the 17th and early 18th centuries, during the lifetime of Princess Sophie Dorothea of Celle, whose 300th death anniversary falls in 2026, was a time of transition. The traditional treatment methods of doctors, such as the theory of humors, were increasingly being questioned, and early scientific discoveries provided the foundations for a new, modern medicine. At the same time, folk medicine abandoned most of the treatments, many of which were as obscure as they were frightening. However, there was also knowledge about healing plants and their effects. We will explore all of this during a guided tour in the medicinal plant garden.
