BIFF SPECIAL: THE TUNDRA WITHIN ME (In the presence of the filmmaker - with moderation)

After years in Oslo, the Sámi artist Lena returns with her son to the vast tundra of her homeland in Norwegian Sápmi. There, her modern art encounters misunderstanding and rejection from the traditionally living population. Meanwhile, the reindeer herder Máhtte struggles for more responsibility and recognition within his family of reindeer breeders. For both of them, the encounter between tradition and modernity becomes a turning point that changes everything. The film gains special authenticity through the cultural connection and biographical knowledge of the cast and crew: like the director/screenwriter, the actors themselves belong to the Sámi community. Sara Margrethe Oskal's feature film debut premiered in 2024 in the main competition of the Braunschweig International Film Festival (BIFF) and won the women's film award Die TILDA. The event is organized in cooperation between film.macht.kritisch. Screenings and BIFF to strengthen the visibility of Sámi perspectives in cinema and make Oskal's work accessible to a broader audience. The film.macht.kritisch. series, curated by Canan Turan, focuses on intersectional feminist, queer, decolonial, and anti-discriminatory films that tell stories of historically marginalized groups, question the status quo, and open new perspectives, similar to the namesake podcast. Following the screening, we invite the audience to discuss central themes of the film with the director: identity, belonging, artistic freedom, and cultural and personal self-determination.
