"The Hagestolz" Philipp Hochmair & The Austrian Salonists An evening with the two giants of Upper Austrian culture: Adalbert Stifter & Anton Bruckner Their apparent worldliness, but also their love for nature, are captured in text and music and gently related to one another. The Salonists respond to Stifter's "Hagestolz," with its contrast of youth and old age, with arrangements of Bruckner's early works up to his late symphonies.
The Hagestolz
"A young man sets out on his journey. Joyful, enthusiastic. Life lies ahead of him, opening up hopefully; ready to be turned like the pages of a book. Raised by a foster mother, surrounded by affection and love, Victor, the youthful main character in Stifter's "Hagestolz," seeks to uncover the secret of his family history and sets out to find his uncle. There he encounters a bitter, gaunt old man who has shut himself off from the world, from love and affection, on a lonely island. He keeps Victor with him, like a prisoner, tests him, examines his emotional education, and tries to win his love. Old meets young, openness meets closedness, joy meets bitterness... The contrasts that Stifter unfolds in his narrative could not be greater, addressing the profound, existential questions of life. This Hagestolz is a fascinating figure, a tragic existence full of mystery and depth, making it worthwhile to pose Stifter's great life questions about meaning, joy, and goals in life anew in our time.
