LITERATURE IN CINEMA - "Strolling is my profession"

Director Johannes Holzhausen humorously and unconventionally portrays the renowned Austrian writer Karl-Markus Gauß. Accompanied by the camera (Joerg Burger), Gauß opens the doors to his home in Salzburg and embarks on journeys to the edges of Europe, where the wounds of history are still palpable.

I was familiar with his book "In the Forest of Metropolises" before I had the chance to meet Karl-Markus in person. This work deeply impressed me; while reading, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, from curiosity to amusement to sadness and melancholy – and back again. How much life can be found in his observations, which can also be very small and seemingly insignificant! Everyday occurrences – a cyclist passing by on the street; a person making faces who thinks they are unobserved; an unknown woman in Bulgaria thanking him for a small favor – can trigger a leap to other places, to past times, to unknown stories. All of his books share the common thread of being journeys through time and space. Gauß does not write novels, but his work, in its many branches, achieves the density, the level of reflection, and the craftsmanship of great literature.
