MARIA – Tour. On the road with our Romanian caregiver. A road movie.

For three years, Maria A. from Timișoara, Romania, worked in Vorarlberg, traveling 20 hours in a minibus from a provincial village to Feldkirch, going back and forth every four weeks. She took intensive care of the central figure in a foreign family, and then spent a month caring for her own family.

The life of a woman oscillating between devotion and exploitation, between adaptation and extreme pressure is explored. The perspective is always one of loving engagement and professional commitment to other people. Where does a Maria stand personally, what remains for her, where does she disappear amidst all the caregiving, self-sacrifice, and attention? The focus is both on the close-up view of a specific person and the broader context of European economic inequalities that primarily affect women. It tells the story of a special form of migration, guest work, and working conditions.
