Fire Wheel and Witch Drives

On Shrove Tuesday, Darsberg in Neckarsteinach becomes the stage for one of the most impressive carnival traditions in the Odenwald. In almost complete darkness, the participants prepare for the grand ritual: a fire wheel filled with straw is ignited and, with the help of a roughly 15-meter-long spruce trunk, is rolled down the steep slope into the valley. Sparks fly, flames blaze – an archaic spectacle intended to drive away winter and welcome spring.

At the bottom of the valley, numerous spectators are already waiting, eagerly following the spectacle. The fiery event is accompanied by captivating Guggemusik, which creates a very special, almost mystical atmosphere. There is also plenty of food and drink available, inviting everyone to enjoy the evening in good company.

This unique event engages all the senses and is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. Since the performance mostly takes place in the dark, sturdy shoes and a flashlight are strongly recommended to navigate the path safely and enjoy the experience without worry.
