30th International Anniversary Mowing Competition

The Association of South Tyroleans in South Baden warmly welcomes you to the 30th International Mowing Competition here in Bernau in the Black Forest. You’re also welcome to try your hand at mowing yourself. For more than 30 years, the Association of South Tyroleans in South Baden e.V. has organized an annual international scything competition in the southern Black Forest, and since 2001 in the Bernau High Valley. Before agriculture was mechanized, farmers mowed all the meadows with scythes—that is, by hand. Today, only a few people still master the art of mowing with this tool. At the International Mowing Competition in the Bernau Valley, you now have the opportunity to watch the participants mow or to actively participate and compete against the best. Within a set time limit, an area measuring 10 by 2.20 meters must be neatly mowed; the areas are assigned by lottery. Women may choose their own area, while teenagers and children are assigned smaller areas. According to the competition rules, scythes with a blade length of no more than 90 cm may be used. The competition begins in the morning on the meadow above the Bernau Kurhaus in the Innerlehen district. Following the event, the award ceremony will take place at approximately 3:00 p.m. at the Kurhaus, featuring a cozy get-together with musical entertainment and specialties from Baden and South Tyrol. At the same time, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., you can enjoy the music of the Musikverein Albtal e.V. in the Kurpark. A great combination!
