Power and Control

Media is often referred to as the "fourth power" in the state. But how much power do they really have? What is the relationship between journalism and politics? And can the media actually control politics? – In many cases, this is not possible. Because journalism, even independent journalism, is increasingly dependent on the goodwill of those in political power to secure its existence and to have the resources necessary to exercise journalistic oversight.

The popular ZiB 2 presenter and journalist Martin Thür explains the connections between politics, journalism, power, and powerlessness, as well as control. He is convinced that today, in times of an opinion landscape shaped by echo chambers, there is a greater need than ever for journalistic oversight and a wide range of media offerings to inform citizens truthfully and reliably.
