Leopold Forstner was born on November 2, 1878, in Bad Leonfelden. He attended the local primary school and later the State School of Arts and Crafts in Linz. After an apprenticeship at the Tyrolean stained glass and mosaic workshop in Innsbruck, he attended the K.u.K. School of Applied Arts and studied in Munich. He worked as a draftsman, painter, illustrator, and graphic artist before founding the Vienna Mosaic Workshop in 1906. Throughout his career, he collaborated with well-known contemporary artists such as Gustav Klimt and Otto Wagner and is considered one of the most significant representatives of the Vienna Secession. He died on November 5, 1936, in Stockerau.
