Ernst Siegfried Steffen (1936–1970) of Heilbronn spent nearly half his life behind walls and bars. As a child, he was abused by his alcoholic father, and his time in institutions turned into an odyssey through reform schools and prisons. He finally began writing at the Bruchsal men’s prison, encouraged by the warden there. Dr. Anton Knittel will read from “When I Come Home: Poems and Prose from Prison” at the Kilianshaus and discuss the moving and thought-provoking texts through which Steffen processed his despair and a harrowing life story.
