Hilde Domin, born in 1909 in Cologne to Jewish parents, lived in exile for 22 years before returning to Germany in 1954. She spent most of her exile in the Dominican Republic, from which she also derived her stage name. She referred to the beginning of her writing career in her early 40s as a rebirth. "I stood up and went home to the word, from where I cannot be driven away. But the word was the German word. That is why I traveled back across the sea, to where the word lives." The actress Karen Schneeweiß-Voigt recites poems and autobiographical writings by Hilde Domin. The musician Katharina Burges enriches the evening with her own compositions and those of Jewish composers at the piano.
