From ironworks to sanatorium—the monastery after 1800

With the abolition of the monastery as a result of secularization in 1803, many buildings on the monastery grounds suddenly became vacant. What happened to them? On this tour, guests will learn everything about the architectural development and use of the large monastery grounds: from the count's residence, the royal administrative headquarters, the ironworks, and the royal sanatorium and nursing home. The history of the place was marked by economic ups and downs and everyday life in a psychiatric hospital. Today, the monastery grounds are primarily known as a cultural experience and still serve as a spiritual center. Participants can therefore expect a lively journey through time, exploring the eventful history of the former Schussenried monastery. The newly designed outdoor areas of the monastery are also worth seeing; the inner courtyard and the monastery meadow near the arcades have been equipped with colorful flower beds, a new path system, and numerous seating areas, which invite visitors to linger after the tour.
