Soda Lakes - Unique Habitats - Excursion

From ancient crustaceans to wading birds and salt plants - experience one of the rarest habitats in Europe with us! In the far east of Austria, there is a unique habitat for Central Europe: the salt pans. Here, in the saline water, live ancient crustaceans that have existed since the time of the dinosaurs and today serve as important food for birds such as the avocet. Along the salty edges of the pans, plants can be found that are also seen along coastal areas. The constant alternation between wet and dry conditions creates new microhabitats time and again. However, these extraordinary areas are under severe threat: of the formerly 140 pans, only about 45 remain today.

Booking online at: http://www.nationalparkneusiedlersee.at Equipment: Own bicycle, sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing (sun, rain, and wind protection), water bottle. The tour takes place in all weather conditions. The national park reserves the right to adapt the content of the tour flexibly to the respective weather conditions.

Meeting point: National Park Center Illmitz. From here, participants will cycle into the designated area of the national park. A personal bicycle is mandatory, but can be rented from local bike rentals for a small fee.
