For around 18 years, Thomas Raab has been active in the German-speaking world, reading from his books, moderating events, and hosting evenings that combine literature with music. It has increasingly become clear how much joy the audience and he derive from free storytelling during the readings, meandering off-topic, sharing laughter, and engaging in direct exchange.
With READING, Thomas Raab fulfills his long-held desire to make exactly that the conceptual core of the evening. A literary-cabaret solo format, beyond the classic author reading.
A writer sits on stage, his books beside him – and he grandly fails to read from them.
Instead, he shares stories from behind the scenes
About writing and failing.
About readings where everything went wrong.
About passages that were cut.
About embarrassing moments that never made it into the book.
About the absurdities of his industry and other secrets.
READING is an evening about what has accumulated between the pages. About the life of an author who never really wanted to be one (dyslexic, German in school: difficult) yet has been active for 18 years and has experienced more stories than can fit into books.
And when Raab reads, it’s a particularly botched sentence, a few outrageous spelling mistakes, nasty reader letters, self-revealing email exchanges with the editorial team, or he explains with much self-irony in which absurd situations certain ideas came to him and why exactly this passage should have never been published.
READING is not a classic reading.
And it’s not a cabaret with a barrage of gags.
It is a very personal, very funny evening
between literature, storytelling, and self-revelation.
