What’s happening in the Wild West of Braunschweig? - Walking tour of the Westbahnhof Open-Air Museum Meeting point: Westbahnhof 11 - opposite Eis am Gleis The tour of the Westbahnhof Open-Air Museum showcases the close interconnection between industrialization and the railway system in the 19th and 20th centuries. Both could not have developed so rapidly without each other. The historic Westbahnhof served as Braunschweig's most important shunting yard from 1886 to 1960 and was the largest freight handling point for the industries located in the west and north of the city. As early as 1884, the Braunschweig State Railway (BLE) was founded with private capital. The first section from the Nordbahnhof to the Westbahnhof was the industrial ring line. At its peak, 47 companies and 107 storage facilities were connected to the ring line. We will embark on a two-kilometer guided tour to trace these historical footprints. At a total of 21 stations, you will experience Braunschweig's urban, railway, and industrial history. We will begin with the office building of the timber trade Brachvogel. As in old times, a Chinese dragon adorns the newly renovated roof. After the tour, we can deepen our experience with a cozy gathering. Led by: Dr. Arndt Gutzeit | Horst Splett
