Michael Hartung (Charly Hübner), the owner of a hopelessly indebted video store, seems to have bet on the wrong horse his entire life. When an ambitious journalist confronts him with the results of his research, everything suddenly changes for the charmingly melancholic Micha. The relentless journalist claims that Micha, as an employee of the former Reichsbahn more than three decades ago, helped organize the largest mass escape from the GDR. Allegedly, there are relevant pieces of evidence in the archived Stasi files and even a documented prison stay, followed by a forced transfer to lignite open-pit mining. Lured by an enticing fee, Micha confirms the story, even though only a few fragments of it are true.
