Everyone from 1920 to today
The list of composers who took on the task of providing a musical component to the "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival reads like a who’s who of stylistically diverse and successful composers, musicians, and ensemble leaders operating in the field of performing and composing: Bernhard Paumgartner, Einar Nilson, Joseph Messner, Gerhard Wimberger, Paul Angerer, Werner Pirchner, Martin Lowe, Julian Crouch, Markus Zwink, Mathias Rüegg, Wolfgang Mitterer, to name just a few...
Creating music for the play about the life and death of the rich man has always been an attractive challenge and a balancing act at the same time. The arrangements, adaptations, and compositions of the funeral marches, ballads, fanfares, and festival hymns from over 100 years testify to the incredible diversity and range of the epochs and styles traversed.
In our program, we present a selection of adaptations, compositions, and arrangements from 11 decades with an ensemble of interpreters, improvisers, and composers, embedded in a contemporary and sometimes winking perspective. Between the musical pieces, Johannes Silberschneider recites. He was seen as the Poor Neighbor from 2013 to 2016 and then in the role of Faith until 2018 on the Salzburg Jedermann stage. Furthermore, he can be regarded as THE expert on the works of Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
Contents, reviews from the history of Jedermann, excerpts from rehearsal protocols, dramaturgical notes, statistics, anecdotes – all of this finds its optimal voice through Johannes Silberschneider.
An exciting, absurd, and breathtaking dialogue of contrasts, opposites, and surprises.
