Thomas Bernhard's novel centers around a narrator who, from the distance of his armchair, observes an "artistic evening gathering" in Vienna's Gentzgasse and dissects it with malicious precision. The assembled crowd is waiting for the announced arrival of a Burgtheater actor; moreover, most of the people in this gathering are connected to each other because their friend Joana, who took her own life, was buried in the village of Kilb that afternoon.

Thomas Bernhard's famous prose is brought to life in a recitative style by Nicholas Ofczarek, while the musicians of Franui, among others, will be heard performing a specialty that has made them known: the celebration of funeral marches and mourning music.
