Experience Wesertal

The Weser Valley has changed significantly. This change is explained during the tour. The settlement of the Weser Valley occurred only in the last 1000 years on some islands of the meandering Weser (Rinteln, Großenwieden, Neelhof). Previously, people preferred to settle in the slightly higher areas along the Weser (Exten, Hohenrode, Deckbergen). Initially, the land was used for hunting and fishing. Over the course of settlement, areas were first used for grazing. It was only in the last 500 years that more and more areas were converted into arable land. This development is exemplified by the case of Neelhof. For about 100 years, there has been an increasing extraction of gravel and sand, leading to further usage. Especially in the last 40 years, there has been a demand for compensation for the interventions in nature, initially through compensation areas, and later through recultivation measures. Sand and gravel are the most significant local raw materials, but the supply in Germany is becoming increasingly difficult. The economic significance, as well as the associated problems and conflicts, are highlighted. The example of the AHE corporate group clearly shows that it is possible to alleviate this conflict, especially since the company was awarded the European Sustainability Award in 2019.
