Reversed World: The speculator Mr. Goldfuchs on the first floor loses his fortune and has to declare bankruptcy, while the penniless clerk Adolf Schlucker on the ground floor becomes a rich man due to an unexpected inheritance. Even in matters of love, chaos reigns in Mr. Zins's tenement house. There can be no talk of orderly circumstances. Johann Nestroy's musical satire on the whims of fortune became a theatrical sensation after its premiere in 1835: Two floors simultaneously on one stage had never been seen before. To this day, this idea provides a compelling image of the dialectic between abundance and scarcity.
