The 7th International Conference on Non-Professional Interpreting and Translation (NPIT7) invites the exploration of multilingual practices in various migration, diaspora, and globalized contexts. Non-professional interpreting and translating occurs in a wide range of public and private spaces, including schools, hospitals, museums, NGOs, and governmental institutions. In these areas, multilingual actors – often non-professional translators or interpreters – facilitate communication between different groups and actively contribute to understanding.
The conference aims to illuminate the dynamic relationships and societal impacts of these actors and to analyze their activities in fields such as healthcare, education, art, commerce, and crisis management. Another goal is to question traditional distinctions between professional and non-professional interpreting and translating and to develop new perspectives on binary categories such as qualified/unqualified or paid/unpaid.
NPIT7 invites researchers and practitioners to explore the historical and contemporary roles of multilingual actors, analyze the technologies that shape their work, and discuss the geopolitical, socioeconomic, and technological factors that influence their positions. By promoting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, the conference aims to deepen the understanding of multilingual practices and make visible their diverse motivations and functions.
