From the Archive: 70 Years of Eurovision Song Contest

Christian Reichhold and Regina Nassiri shed light on Austria's Eurovision Song Contest entries from the past decades with Marianne Mendt, Gary Lux, Timna Brauer, and Cesár Sampson.

Marianne Mendt, the "Mother of Austropop," singer, and actress, achieved 16th place for Austria in the competition in 1971 with the song "Musik." Gary Lux has also represented Austria multiple times at the ESC: his most notable participations were in 1983 (with Westend), 1985, and 1987.

Singer Timna Brauer represented our country in 1986 with the song "Die Zeit ist einsam." Cesár Sampson represented Austria at the Song Contest in 2018 with "Nobody But You" and landed an impressive third place. Cesár, coming from a musical family, began his show business career as a child in a music video by LaToya Jackson. At 17, he toured with well-known Viennese alternatives like Kruder & Dorfmeister. He then predominantly worked behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer, while also working as a social worker and vocal coach.
