Merkersdorf 90, 2082 Hardegg

For 25 years, bat research has been conducted in the National Park! Whether in the old castle walls, in the dense forest, near houses and gardens, or along the Thaya River, these fluttering little mammals feel very much at home in the Thayatal. This is because 20 out of the 31 bat species documented in Austria can be found in the national park area. These species have very different habitat requirements. However, they all share the ability to use echolocation to find their food and navigate their surroundings. This can be made audible with so-called ultrasonic detectors, allowing for good differentiation between the species and the opportunity to observe them in the beam of a flashlight.

The two national park rangers, Claudia Reiss and Martha Tiller, vividly convey the fascinating lifestyle of these nocturnal hunters and invite children to participate in numerous craft activities.
