The Klezmatics | 40th Anniversary Tour Ecstatic Klezmer Music Since 1986!
The Klezmatics are among the most successful and creative bands in modern Jewish music. Since their founding in 1986 in New York's East Village, they have led the worldwide Klezmer revival, renewing the centuries-old Yiddish music tradition with a progressive and contemporary approach. For four decades, The Klezmatics have captivated audiences worldwide with their unique sound, blending Klezmer with jazz, gospel, punk, classical, Latin, and Balkan music. Their music is rooted in the Eastern European Jewish tradition but represents a modern worldview, addressing themes such as human rights, anti-fundamentalism, and life in the diaspora.
To celebrate their 40th anniversary, the six musicians will embark on a worldwide tour from 2025 to 2027, taking them primarily to Europe, as the band's story began here in the 1980s, along with performances in the USA and Canada. In parallel, the Klezmatics are producing their most ambitious studio project, "The New York Sessions," an album paying tribute to the cultural melting pot of New York. The album features newly interpreted anthems, powerful new original compositions, and multilingual pieces that bring together Yiddish with Uyghur, Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian, Ukrainian, and other languages. Alongside this album, the re-release of some of their most significant CDs is also planned.
Throughout their exciting history, The Klezmatics have realized many musical collaborations and will conjure up a few surprises on stage during their anniversary world tour. Each show will be an ecstatic tribute to the extensive work of The Klezmatics, featuring both well-known and new songs, symbolizing a joyful future for Klezmer music!
The Klezmatics are the only Klezmer band to have ever won a Grammy Award. They received it in 2007 in the category of "Best Contemporary World Music Album" for their outstanding project "Wonder Wheel: Lyrics by Woody Guthrie," where they engaged with the socially critical texts of Woody Guthrie. The result was an album and a concert program that continues to be performed and celebrated worldwide to this day. The band has released a total of 13 successful albums, reached the top of the Billboard World Music Charts, and received numerous international awards, including the German Critics' Prize and the New York Jewish Music Award.
The Klezmatics have performed in over 20 countries and at the most prestigious concert halls and festivals around the world, from Carnegie Hall to European cathedrals to major rock festivals. Their music is regularly featured in films, TV productions, theater plays, and performances. For example, their songs have been heard on the Late Night Show with David Letterman and in HBO's 'Sex and the City.' The Klezmatics have collaborated with a wide range of artists, including violinist Itzhak Perlman, Israeli star Chava Alberstein, gospel singer Joshua Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, poet Allen Ginsberg, Theodore Bikel, and many more.
