Johannisfriedhof/Iburger Straße 54, 49082 Osnabrück

In 1808, two new cemeteries were established in Osnabrück. Burials were no longer permitted in the churches and around the churches. The Hase Cemetery was designated for the old town and for citizens and farmers north of Osnabrück. The Johannis Cemetery was for the citizens of the new town and the southern farming communities of the city. Today, the cemetery is located in the areas of the districts Kalkhügel and Schölerberg. It reflects the economic development and population growth in the second half of the 19th century. There was still space for small businesses that expanded into factories. Their founders were often buried in family burial sites, which remain very representative to this day. Notable individuals from beyond the city limits, such as the aviation pioneer Gustav Tweer (1893 – 1916), whose mother owned a cleaning business on Johannisstraße, also found their final resting place here. Touching are the honorary cemeteries for the soldiers who died in Osnabrück hospitals during the First World War and for the bombing victims of the Second World War.
