With a staged reading, the Reichenau Festival will also commemorate a very dark chapter of Austrian history in the upcoming season. Horrific events are presented and narrated in a sober manner, as looking back at the past may help us find a better path into the future. In April 1945, shortly before the end of the Nazi regime, innocents are arbitrarily judged and killed, including the granddaughters of Schnitzler muse Olga Waissnix. Two years later, the three main perpetrators stand trial. However, instead of expressing insight or regret, they insist on their rights at the time, refer to a state that had long since disappeared around them, and to orders that only they themselves issued. This is documented in the trial records, and it is also stated in the novel "The Last Days" by Martin Prinz.

The text, adapted for the stage by the author himself, will be brought to the stage of the Great Hall by our festival ensemble this year under the direction of Maria Happel. We invite you to be brave with us and to take a look.
