Under a bridge on the Seine, Andreas lingers as a failed existence. A mysterious encounter with a stranger opens up the possibility of a new beginning. But how does one cope when happiness suddenly overwhelms them? The homeless man wanders through the streets of Paris, life wants to flow and be celebrated. A little drink won’t hurt… We follow the good-natured, seemingly naive city drifter, recognize ourselves in his inner division, and observe how the past gradually begins to catch up with him. Roth skillfully portrays this development and raises questions about the fateful aspects of our lives. His poetic language takes us deep, his stories stir us up, but they also always speak of the quiet longing for wonders. It is comforting and deeply moving how Joseph Roth depicts the fate of the drinker Andreas in his literary testament – a mirror of his own life and exemplary for many who walk this path. He shows us two faces that can never be reconciled yet can be brought together in one person. In a tender tone, full of quiet dignity and subtle humor, he opens a space where pain, hope, and humor can quietly coexist.
