Who was Marie Antoinette? Notorious femme fatale or tragic martyr queen? Demonized by some and canonized by others, her image seems to vanish among countless projection surfaces. Was she perhaps simply an ordinary, average character in the end?

"It is important to bring the person back to the forefront behind the historical," noted Stefan Zweig in his diary as he wrote his biography of the myth-laden Habsburg princess. Zweig traces her journey from her marriage to the French heir to the throne and later King Louis XVI to her execution by the Revolutionary Tribunal – always in search of her true personality beyond glamour, cliché, and accusation.

With Marie Antoinette, Nils Strunk and Lukas Schrenk once again bring a work by Stefan Zweig to the stage as a musical play at the Burgtheater in Vienna and in Salzburg, following the Chess novella.
